UAE Team Emirates' Brandon McNulty has survived a late comeback from Maxim Van Gils to continue his impressive start to 2024 with victory at GP Miguel Indurain.
Seven men managed to work their way into the day's breakaway and as the peloton gave them some leeway, their advantage quickly built up to over six minutes.
As the race began to break down though, the break were soon caught, with a threatening counter-attack getting a gap. Included in the new lead group, Stephen Williams, Oscar Onley, Andrea Bagioli and Nans Peters in a nine-man attack.
Knowing the danger of the move though, UAE Team Emirates took control of the peloton and swiftly pulled back the attack with around 12km to go.
After repeated attacks from various riders, the first man to get clear separation was UAE Team Emirates' Brandon McNulty.
Heading into the final 3km, the American has eked out a 13 second advantage over the chasing group led by Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL.
Unhappy to let others do the chase, Maxim Van Gils countered with 2km to go, quickly bridging across to McNulty and attempting to go straight over the top although, the American was fighting hard to keep contact.
In the sprint for the line, McNulty opened things up and Van Gils was simply unable to come around. Completing the podium in third, Oscar Onley.
