Brandon McNulty has been very impressive in the early portion of 2024. After bright performance at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, UAE Tour and Paris-Nice, the American has now added victory at GP Miguel Indurain.
Attacking clear solo in the last 10km, McNulty seemed to have completely blown up when he was caught and passed by Maxim Van Gils on the final climb. Refusing to admit defeat though, the American refocused, caught his rival on the descent and took victory in a thrilling sprint for the line.
"I accelerated on the last, long climb. I then had a gap and only had to climb the small steep climb," McNulty recalled post-race. "But I stayed calm and started the descent. I could still come back there. Then fortunately I won the sprint. This was really madness. A very good day."
"It's a very good year for me. I'm looking forward to more, because this is really great," the UAE Team Emirates man concluded. "We start Itzulia Basque Country on Monday, a new big goal for us. I can now work towards that calmly and with self-confidence."
