Bahrain - Victorious came into the Vuelta a Espana with plenty climbers and GC hopes. The climb to Arinsal and a crash from Santiago Buitrago largely brought them down, but because of yesterday's mammoth breakaway, both Mikel Landa and Wout Poels have moved ahead of Remco Evenepoel.
“It was a very tough stage, as expected. We were up front with four riders and that way we were able to position ourselves well for the final climb, knowing that we had enough of a lead over the peloton," Landa told In de Leiderstrui. "Until the finish we fought to still make the GC possible, so that's how I moved up again. I'm happy to be among them again, but in the coming days we have to see if I should go for a classification or better focus on stages."
Landa rode to fourth on the day, outside of the big screen but putting on a strong performance which sees him move up to sixth in the overall classification, 1:58 minutes down on Lenny Martínez. Alongside was Wout Poels, sixth on the day, who is now 4th in the GC 1:41 minutes down on the Frenchman.
“We all knew we had to keep an eye on Sepp Kuss, he's a really good climber," Poels continued. "Jumbo-Visma really rode for him. When he went, we just couldn't follow. However, the feeling is good and I hope we can keep it that way." The duo frequently perform strongly on the third week of Grand Tours and have now found a breath of fresh air and motivation to aim for a strong result.
