Having taken the victory at last year’s UCI Gravel World Championships in Veneto, Italy, Matej Mohorič is one of the clear favourites for Strade Bianche, with the Slovenian rider set to lead his Bahrain Victorious team in Tuscany this weekend.
The revised route for this year’s edition makes it the longest in the race’s short history at 215km in length, with 71km of gravel roads divided over 15 sectors. On the new route, Mohorič said in an interview with his team ahead of the race that “with a new race course this year, the dynamics have changed compared to past editions. The increased length may favour lighter climbers and GC specialists. However, much depends on our strategy on Saturday”.
Having begun his season strongly with a stage win at the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana, Mohorič looked to be in good form going into Opening Weekend. However, his Classics campaign did not get off to the start that he had hoped for, as he finished 24th at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and 79th at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne.
On his form ahead of this weekend’s race, the former Milano-Sanremo winner said “I feel in good form, although the results from the Opening Weekend were not as expected. I approach the race with cautious ambition, determined to perform well and contend for victory”.
Mohorič will be supported by the likes Torstein Træen and the experienced figure Andrea Pasqualon, along with several of his younger teammates, as Nicolò Buratti, Matevž Govekar, Fran Miholjevic and Edoardo Zambanini form the rest of the Bahrain Victorious lineup.
