INEOS Grenadiers have three contenders for the overall classification. Despite having a strong and experienced support team, this will mean the British team will have one of the most difficult tasks of the day as they look to protect their ambitions to go for the overall win.
"...I think the most important thing is that we get those guys started on all the sectors as best we can. Then the race will show how it will go," van Baarle told Wielerflits. The Paris-Roubaix winner said that going for the win on today's stage is "not what I'm here for".
Geraint Thomas is an experienced classics rider. However, he will need the support of INEOS to be able to be in contention for the top places, whilst Daniel Martínez and Adam Yates will be needing more support from the team to be able to resist the treacherous day. Luckily for van Baarle the pressure doesn't solely lie on him, with Luke Rowe being a crucial support for such a day, and Filippo Ganna as a powerhouse will also provide crucial support positioning into the sectors.
“I think it's going to be quite hectic. The cobblestone stage in the Tour is always hectic, so that will also be the case this year. We explored the Monday after [Tour de] Switzerland. I know all the sectors. There are three in it that we also do in Roubaix and one is opposite, the last one. So it's different from Roubaix," the Dutchman explained.
“It is of course very special that there is another stage in the Tour on cobblestones exactly this year. I will definitely enjoy it too," van Baarle concluded.
