Tadej Pogacar was by no means in bad form yesterday at the Col de Marie Blanque, however after witnessing first hand the form of Jonas Vingegaard, it's certain that UAE need to rethink it's tactics, and from today onwards race differently if they want to win the Tour de France.
“It is always better when you win and take the yellow jersey, but we knew that Jonas was in top form and we hoped that was the case for Tadej as well. That was not the case yesterday," Mauro Gianetti told Sporza this morning at the start of stage 6. "When you get dropped, your motivation drops a bit, but this is sport. We need to have the ambition and passion again and hope for progress.”
Pogacar ultimately waited for the rest of the GC contenders in the chasing group. The loss was of over a minute at the finish line, and Jai Hindley entered the fight alongside Pogacar after a successful breakaway. “The Tour is still a long time away, but the situation is clear. This is the reality and the level is very high. Tadej is fresher and we hope to see progress," the team manager continued.
"Whether he can immediately take revenge? You need good legs for that, but Tadej is calm," he adds. Today's stage into Cauterets is on paper another opportunity to attack, however it is now uncertain how the Slovenian will race taking into consideration the new GC. He sits 53 seconds behind Jonas Vingegaard and 1:40 minutes behind Jai Hindley. "The leading group demanded a lot of energy yesterday, but we can now interpret the course differently and that can be an advantage."
