Stage 6 of the Tour de France will go over the Col du Tourmalet and Cauterets. A day after Jonas Vingegaard put on a spectacle to take serious time on the competition, teammate Wilco Kelderman believes the Dutch team will go on the attack once again.
"Yes, Jonas is very well. We could see that. I think it goes without saying that he will try something on an uphill finish like today. There will be time differences again," Kelderman told NOS this morning. "He was really strong yesterday. It was a difficult stage and he took some time. The speed was high all day, but that suits Jonas best."
Kelderman was absent in the finale of stage 5 and also fell out of GC contention, however his support role for the Dane will certainly be on display this afternoon as he's expected to be up there alongside Sepp Kuss when the pace accelerates on the second Pyrenean day. Vingegaard has entered the race with terrific form, and with a very strong ride over the Col de Marie Blanque, Jumbo-Visma may want to deal a blow once again.
Asked if the race could even break apart in the Col du Tourmalet - the day's penultimate ascent - Kelderman believes it's possible. "It certainly could. It remains to be seen what will happen in the race and who will lead the way. I think Jonas can take his time again. We just shouldn't underestimate Jai Hindley, because he is also very strong and has a bit of the same profile as Jonas," he concluded.
