Jumbo-Visma did not escape the
Vuelta a Espana's opening team time-trial unharmed.
Primoz Roglic did however stay upright on the day and considered it some sort of victory after so many went down on the slick roads of Barcelona.
"It was wet and treacherous. A team time trial means finding a balance between riding hard and staying safe," Roglic said in a press release issued by Jumbo-Visma. "We managed that. We can be happy with it. The aim was to get through without any unnecessary problems. This was the first of 21 stages, so we still have enough stages to go. You can't win the Vuelta here, but you can lose it."
Whilst Roglic or any Jumbo rider hit the deck, Jonas Vingegaard suffered a puncture and the Dutch team waited for one of it's leaders. In such a short effort with such high speeds it was a deadly incident. The team also suffered with the unexpected darkness, with the heavy rain also not helping.
It was a 32-second loss on Enric Mas, 26-second loss to Remco Evenepoel and 12 seconds on Geraint Thomas. Although it was a day where they did not suffer any losses, it ends up objectively being a bad outcome for a stage where they were the main favourites to take the win.
