Mark Cavendish's future remains uncertain and virtually every World Tour which had space and budget has been rumoured to be a possibility for the Manxman. The list however narrows quickly, as Trek - Segafredo have also publically distanced themselves from a possible transfer.
“We decided to keep it at 29 riders. Mark is a great athlete and certainly very interesting, but we don't have a place for him at the moment," team manager Luca Guarcilena said in an interview with Cyclingnews. With the American team already in Spain for it's first training camp, it has also played a role in the decision. "A few years ago we made a pretty clear decision to invest in young riders.”
“So far, the choice to invest in young riders has paid off. We therefore want to continue to give space to riders who have grown with us," he continued. Trek only signed three riders into the 2023 season, those being Eritrean talent Natnael Tesfatsion, Cyclocross specialist Thibau Nys and Mathias Vacek who races for the now-disbanded Gazprom-Rusvelo team. The latter two have raced for the team as trainees last summer.
Cavendish in the meantime is being heavily hinted as a possibility for Human Powered Health, one of the few teams with available positions and a good leadout that could suit the Manxman's needs to perform in the sprints.
