Days after announcing his retirement at the Giro d'Italia,
Vincenzo Nibali has confirmed that he will be racing his last days in the peloton this year and he has in the meantime made changes to his schedule, as the initial plan of riding the Giro-Tour double is now scraped off.
At the start of the season, the Italian had the goal of riding all five monuments and the two consecutive Grand Tours, however illness and consequent lack of form has prevented him from following the plan, and his form at the Giro d'Italia seemed below his expectations as he lost over two minutes to the GC contenders on Mount Etna.
It has been reported by Gazzetta dello Sport that the Tour de France has been taken off the Sicilian's plan, as he will be focusing on the season finale which should include the Vuelta a España and Il Lombardia. The Vuelta was the first Grand Tour he managed to win, 12 years ago already, and Il Lombardia has been another career-defining race as Nibali took two of his three monument wins in the Alps back in 2015 and 2017.
The Italian newspaper has also added that after the Giro d'Italia, he will be taking a recovery period, and race the national championships inbetween races - with a possible preparation race for the Vuelta a España yet to be defined.
