The third day of the
Vuelta a Burgos was full of drama, with the GC fight opening up as
Pavel Sivakov attacked far from the finish and won crucial time, as
AG2R Citroën Team's stagiaire
Bastien Tronchon took an impressive first pro win in the final sprint.
The day's breakaway had enough of a lead going into the climb to Picón Blanco, the hardest ascent of the race. Joel Nicolau and Vojtech Repa went over the summit in front, however closely chased by Pavel Sivakov and Miguel Ángel López who attacked off the GC group in the climb and got a considerable gap of almost a minute.
Over the descent Pavel Sivakov went clear of the Colombian, caught the remaining breakaway riders, with AG2R's stagiaire Bastien Tronchon. The INEOS Grenadiers rider had the strongest legs, but could not drop the Frenchman, as the duo entered the final kilometer with 30 seconds of lead, a gap shortened by the collaboration between EF, BORA and Bahrain in the peloton.
In the fight for the stage win however, Tronchon took advantage of the situation to take his first pro win, one that no-one would've expected. The 20-year old beat Pavel Sivakov to second, whilst
Alejandro Valverde won the sprint for third place.
