The sixth stage of the
Volta a Portugal - counting the prologue - has seen a lot of drama unfold, as the race lead changed between teammates, with
Frederico Figueiredo taking the stage win and jumping to the race lead after attacking his own teammate
Mauricio Moreira.
The stage was fully controlled by
Glassdrive Q8 Anicolor, who weren't alone but easily reeled in the day's breakaway before the final ascent to the Observatório de Vila Nova. The final climb was hard enough to see serious gaps and they appeared.
Alejandro Marque suffered a mechanical halfway up the climb seeing his podium ambitions slightly shortened, as Glassdrive rode to set up an attack in the final five kilometers by Frederico Figueiredo. The Portuguese climber quickly got a gap, as teammate and yellow jersey Mauricio Moreira cracked and lost contact with the chasing group.
Although the Uruguayan managed to recover ground and return to the group with his rivals, Figueiredo was far up the road as he took the stage win and 37 seconds on the road, becoming the new yellow jersey.
Henrique Casimiro and
Luís Fernandes rode to second and third place on the day.
