The final metres of In Flanders Fields - From Middelkerke to Wevelgem ended in frustration for Jordi Meeus, who saw his chances in the sprint disappear after a high-speed incident inside the final 300 metres.
The Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe sprinter was forced to brake sharply as the fight for position intensified, finding himself squeezed towards the barriers alongside Christophe Laporte of Team Visma | Lease a Bike. The moment immediately ended any hope of contesting the victory.
Meeus crossed the line, visibly angered, gesturing in frustration before striking his handlebars. “What the hell, you pushed me into the barriers!”
According to the Belgian, the incident came after a shift in movement within the sprint, which left him with nowhere to go.
As soon as the race finished, Meeus made his way directly to Laporte, who had taken third place, to demand an explanation. “You can brake, can’t you?” he shouted. “I was on Philipsen’s wheel, and you changed your line. What the hell, you pushed me into the barriers!”
Laporte’s response was calmer, though he rejected the criticism. The French rider attempted to diffuse the situation, but maintained that the outcome could have been avoided. “Meeus should have braked.”
Footage of the incident shows the pair exchanging words immediately after the finish, capturing one of the most tense moments of the race’s dramatic finale.
