Demi Vollering has taken the victory on stage 2 of the
Vuelta a Burgos Feminas as the wind caused chaos, ripping the race to shreds.
Lorena Wiebes crossed the line first but was relegated to third after the conclusion of the stage.
Stage 2, a relatively hilly day, but a bunch sprint was expected. However, whilst the profile barely shows it, the finale into Lerma was anything but flat, it is a small town finish in the middle of a village where positioning and explosivity will be everything.
With the wind causing chaos, echelons were forming. A lead group of 23 riders that included stage 1 winner and overall leader, Lorena Wiebes, her teammate Demi Vollering, Chloe Dygert and a group of Trek - Segafredo riders such as Elisa Balsamo, Lucinda Brand and Shirin van Anrooij.
With 25km to go they had 53 seconds over the main peloton. With the pace up front fierce, riders soon found themselves struggling to hold the wheel.
With just over 20km to the finish, Silvia Persico was one of those riders to be dropped by the leaders with just 16 remaining at that point.
As the leaders reached the 10km to go banner, just 11 riders remained in the front group.
Coming into the final kilometre with nearly a two minute advantage over the main peloton, victory was assured for the leading group.
In the final sprint it was Vollering, leading out Wiebes. Once Wiebes opened her sprint no one could match her as she secured her second straight victory and with Vollering in second,
Team SD Worx secured yet another one-two finish, Chloe Dygert came home third.
The drama continued after the stage as Wiebes was relegated to third, handing Vollering the win.
