Lorena Wiebes powered to a brilliant sprint victory on the opening stage of the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.
Stage 1 saw the riders head into Medina de Pomar. A 115-kilometre stage the most likely result was a regular bunch sprint. Nevertheless, Valeria Valgonen (Massi - Tactic Women Team) tried a breakaway and was a lone carrot for the peloton to chase.

With Valgonen never being allowed much more than a minute advantage, her chances of victory were incredibly slim.
30km to go and the race was all back together Valgonen having been swallowed up by the peloton.
As the race reached the finale attacks started to come thick and fast at the front of the peloton and whilst none were able to create a meaningful gap the constant move were surely sapping the energy from the legs.
With all the GC riders safely through the 3km to go marker, attentions turned to the bunch sprint.
In the final sprint, it was European Champion Lorena Wiebes who powered to victory ahead of Elisa Balsamo in second and Chloe Dygert in third.
