BORA - hansgrohe have taken another win, as Russian Aleksandr Vlasov has proved his place once again in the peloton by taking the win in Novazzano and jumping into the race lead.
Before the day even started there was a lot of drama in the race, as the likes of Adam Yates, Gino Mader, Soren Kragh Andersen and all of Jumbo-Visma were between the non-starters due to a Covid-19 outbreak and the issues the riders have been suffering with the heat. Nevertheless, Johan Jacobs (Movistar Team), Silvan Dillier (Alpecin-Fenix), Alexander Kamp (Trek - Segafredo), Anthony Turgis (TotalEnergies) and Claudio Imhof (Swiss National Team).
Due to the heat, race leader Stephen Williams early lost contact with the peloton as many suffered in the final circuit, as the breakaway quickly began loosing riders aswell. Silvan Dillier eventually went solo off the front with 36 kilometers to go, against the INEOS-led peloton who despite loosing Yates, had intentions for the day.
With 22 kilometers to go Israel - Premier Tech have taken up the pace in the peloton, initially putting Remco Evenepoel under great difficulty, and eventually dropping him with 10 kilometers to go. Fuglsang attacked on the penultimate ascent however to no avail, but an unexpected move with four kilometers to go saw the Dane solo off the front, with Vlasov, Thomas and Powless chasing.
There was a slight regrouping with some riders bridging across in the final kilometers. Jakob Fuglsang launched the sprint first in the slight ascent to the line, however he finished third as Aleksandr Vlasov sprinted to the win in impressive fashion, beating Neilson Powless and jumping into the race lead.
