La Route d'Occitanie had it's opening stage today finishing in L’Isle-Jourdain, a first day that favoured the sprinters and a bunch sprint was inevitable.
Arnaud Démare won the stage and is the first leader of the race.
The
Groupama - FDJ rider was the overwhelming favourite for the win today, and he didn't fail as the French team put on a strong performance in the final kilometers, having Démare placed in perfect position for the sprint, in which he took the win in convincing fashion.
Pierre Barbier sprinted to a close second, whilst
Elia Viviani went on to finish third.
