Lotto Dstny's
Victor Campenaerts lit up the
Tour de France with his relentlessly attacking riding. As such the Belgian was awarded the prize of most combative rider at the 2023 Tour de France, much to his delight.
“It is really special to win this prize. It was never really an end in itself to ride for it, but more something that came naturally," said Campenaerts to his team's official website after the conclusion of the 110th edition of the Tour de France. "Only in the final week of racing, it became an item and we tried to attack as much as possible to get the prize."
Sadly for the 31-year-old, he was not able to claim a stage win himself, although he was part of multiple breakaways that held off the peloton. "I also need to thank my teammates to realize this," he says. "I think we can look back on this Tour with satisfaction, despite going home without a stage win.”
Finally, Campenaerts mentioned how this prize was much needed after what has been a disappointing and injury-hit season so far. “Personally, this prize gives me a lot of satisfaction. My season hasn’t been going smoothly with that heavy crash and long rehab," concludes the Lotto Dstny star. "I started to doubt whether I could go back to my best level but this Tour de France reassured me."
