Thibaut Pinot heading to Giro d'Italia "with a lot of desire" following Romandie form surge

Thibaut Pinot has hit the prime of his career in the past but he still has cards to play. In what will be his final Giro d'Italia, the Frenchman will hunt one final stage win, and the signs he has shown at the Tour de Romandie make it a very plausible plan.

"The record is good with this top 5. I had good feelings this weekend. I had to validate certain things. Replaying the win in the mountains on the World Tour was important before the Giro. I am very motivated and I'm leaving with a lot of desire," the Groupama-FDJ rider said following the end of the race this Sunday in Geneve.

He and Stefan Küng are expected to be named the leaders of the French team for the Corsa Rosa, and a win is very much within reach. The 32-year old has won in the Giro in the past back in 2017, in the years where he battled for the overall classification of Grand Tours. A lot has happened however in the meantime, and with the surge of a new generation and a new gear in the peloton Pinot has found himself unable to contest with the big riders.

However at Romandie, although it lacked some of the main climbers in the peloton, he rode to second on the queen stage only being beat by Adam Yates on the day. This saw him also rise to fifth in the overall classification, showing great form ahead of the Giro where he will have big goals.
