UAE Team Emirates had a lot of depth coming into
Tirreno-Adriatico, but could not make use of it. Nevertheless,
João Almeida managed to step up to the position and rise to second place in the overall classification in a tough stage to Osimo.
Alongside Adam Yates and Brandon McNulty, the UAE team hoped to make the difference on stage 5 where there was a long summit finish. On that day the weather prevented serious action from taking place, leading the race to be decided by bonifications and the opening time-trial of the race, as several riders made it to the finish together on all summit finishes. João Almeida was one of the few, virtually securing his second position in the overall classification after today.
“I felt pretty good all day. The team did a great job all day. They protected me because it was quite hectic. I think it went pretty well in the end," he said in a post-race interview. Putting in digs in both final ascents, Almeida was a catalyst in the splitting of the GC group, but could not escape Primoz Roglic.
"The strongest won in the end, I think. He is very strong. That's no surprise. I am happy with our week. Of course we wanted to win, but we can be satisfied with the podium," he concluded. At the end of the day he sprinted to third place, rising to second in the overall classification, 18 seconds behind Primoz Roglic, where he should end the race.
