Earlier in the second week of the Giro d'Italia, Romain Bardet joined a breakaway that saw him climb up the Top10. He managed to benefit from the freedom that he got over having a disappointing first week where he lost significant time in the overall classification, but is ultimately looking to use the final set of mountain stages to make up for a disappointing time-trial on stage 14.
“If I'm honest, I'm a little disappointed with my performance in the time trial. I had hoped for more,” Bardet said in words shared by Team DSM-Firmenich PostNL. The Frenchman was 40th on the day, 3:24 minutes down on Filippo Ganna. A performance that saw him, for example, shed around three minutes to Tadej Pogacar; but ultimately not bad for his expected position in the Top10 - as Bardet has currently not been in the fight for the podium where the riders have been racing strong time-trials.
Bardet descended from eighth to sixth in the overall classification, overtaken by Thymen Arensman and Filippo Zana but ultimately remains stable in the Top10. It is a performance that was underwhelming for Bardet who came into the Giro as a contender for the podium and right after a second place at Liège-Bastogne-Liège behind Tadej Pogacar.
Bardet will hope to make the difference in the mountains, starting on stage 15 where the summit finish in Livigno comes after a long and brutal day on the bike. “I will put this behind me, though. I'm really looking forward to the next chapter in this Giro, when we go into the really high mountains."
The third week could also prove to be a very positive experience for Bardet who could also try and chase a stage win. "There is still a lot to race for in the coming stages. I am motivated to keep fighting with the team,” he concluded.
