Robert Stannard has just taken the overall title in a hotly contested
Tour de Wallonie for
Alpecin-Deceuninck, and talks of high ambitions after showing tremendous form over in Belgium this week.
“I came here with the aim of winning but I never thought things would turn out like this. I am very happy that everything went well," Stannard said at the finale of stage 5, where he secured his overall win as
Jan Bakelants took the stage win. Stannard finished third behind Julian Alaphilippe on the opening day, and took over the race lead on stage two. Despite the classics-like terrain and chaotic racing, the team managed to tilt the race to their favour, with the 23-year able to keep the jersey on his shoulders all the way into Chapelle-lez-Herlaimont.
"It was very stressful, we had to manage the risks in the cobbled sections. I don't think I've ever competed in such a stressful race in my entire career," he said of this final stage. After coming down from World Tour level, the Australian has shown no signs of slowing down, taking his first pro win here. A strong puncheurs and classics rider, his versatility provided him with the results, which he is hoping to expand on in the coming months.
“I hope this victory will mark a turning point in my caree. My next goal will be the Vuelta, where I would like to win a stage," he stated. Tim Merlier and Jay Vine are set to also be at the race, giving the team a wide platform to hunt for stages.
