Robert Stannard wins Tour de Wallonie as Jan Bakelants secures final stage

Jan Bakelants has won the fifth stage of the Tour de Wallonie. He was the fastest in sprint amongst the leading group.

The breakaway included Edward Theuns (Trek-Segafredo), Ben Turner (INEOS Grenadiers), yesterday's stage winner Davide Ballerini (Quick-Step-Alpha Vinyl), Casper Pedersen (Team DSM), Matteo Trentin (UAE Emirates), Dimitri Peyskens (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB), Chris Lawless and Dries Van Gestel ( TotalEnergies). They managed to create a lead of 4 minutes.

Arnauld. De Lie and Biniam Girmay had to abandon the race due to crash. The breakaway was caught 40 kilometers before the finish.

Bakelants launched an early attack, Vanmarcke and Ballerini tried to counterattack in the final two kilometers but failed. Stannard, however, did come close to Bakelants in the last kilometer, but Bakelants maintained his lead till the finish and secured the stage victory. Stannard had to satisfy himself with second place . Axel Laurance finished third. Robert Stannard is the overall winner of the tour.
