Stage 6 of Tirreno-Adriatico was won by Isaac del Toro, the race leader and strongest climber in the Italian stage-race. The UAE Team Emirates - XRG played it cold on the final climb to Camerino, but in the ultra-steep ramps of the final climb he closed down both attacks of Giulio Pellizari and then rode on to take the stage win.
The sixth stage of the race began in San Severino Marche with a breakaway of considerable quality: Gregor Mühlberger, Vincenzo Albanese, Clément Braz Afonso, Filippo Ganna, Walter Calzoni, Timo Kielich and Thomas Silva.
The riders went through the most difficult climb of the race in Sassoletto early on however there were no attempts to put Isaac del Toro under pressure or to attack from behind. In the final circuit, which included four laps including the main climb to Camerino (3Km at 8.8% which coincided with the finish line), Braz Afonso and Mühlberger rode away from the rest of the group out front quickly, and sustained some sort of a gap over the peloton.
Visma made a move after the penultimate ascent of the final climb and split the peloton slightly, isolating Isaac del Toro in the process, but no-one assisted with the attack which then slowed down as Wout van Aert did not have the legs to accelerate further for Matteo Jorgenson. The group saw several riders join once again and head towards the final climb, with the breakaway later being caught by the work of Jan Christen.
Wout Van Aert attacked before the base of the final climb, and when it final began with 3 kilometers to go it was Ben Healy who made his move, catching Van Aert and going off the front by himself. Behind Giulio Pellizzari attacked, not followed straight away from Del Toro, but the Mexican closed the gap afterwards.
Michael Storer also tried, and in the flat section between the two steep ramps of the 3-kilometer ascent Pellizzari attacked again, getting a gap as Del Toro once again did not follow. Uno-X then took responsibility over the group. In the final kilometer however the gradients were very high, and Del Toro then made his move to close down the gap to Pellizzari finally - whilst Healy was caught in the process.
Matteo Jorgenson then attacked up the final ramp followed by Del Toro; and in the final dash to the line between the two it was Del Toro who had the most legs and sprinted to victory with the blue jersey. Tobias Johannessen rode to second place behind, followed by Matteo Jorgenson.
