Stage 7 of Paris-Nice was meant to be a day in the mountains but was cut down to 47 kilometers of flat roads and a freezing peloton. However not everyone was unhappy with the outcome of the day, as INEOS Grenadiers benefited from it and managed to deliver Dorian Godon to his first win in the team's colours.
Most of the story of the stage happened before it started, as last evening the decision was made to remove the summit finish to Auron from the stage, reducing it only to 120 kilometers due to the forecast of heavy snow and extremely low temperatures. However, it was not enough and this morning another meeting led to the stage being cut further, only to a mere 47 kilometers, through the valley road and with a flat finish in Isola. The stage was still held under rain, snowy conditions and a lot of cold.
Tim Marsman of Alpecin-Premier Tech attacked early in the day and formed the breakaway, however he was alone throughout the entire effort and as soon as the peloton really began accelerating, there were no chances for the Dutchman to succeed.
Nicolas Vinokourov launched an attack inside the final 10 kilometers but it was short-lived, whilst with 3 kilometers to go one of the favourites for a top result Vito Braet crashed. Another crash saw Harold Tejada inside the final 3 kilometers, whilst in front INEOS Grenadiers led out the final sprint and French national champion Dorian Godon was able to deliver. Biniam Girmay and Cees Bol finished second and third on the day.
