Filippo Ganna powered to victory in the opening stage of Tirreno-Adriatico 2026 on Monday afternoon, producing a commanding ride in the traditional individual time trial in Lido di Camaiore.
The INEOS Grenadiers rider stopped the clock in 12 minutes and 8 seconds over the 11.5-kilometre coastal course, delivering an average speed of 56.2 km/h to take both the stage win and the first leader’s jersey of the race.
The route along the Tuscan seafront offered few technical challenges, with riders tackling a fast out-and-back test broken only by a turning point halfway through the course and an S-bend inside the final kilometre.

Ganna crushes earlier benchmark

For much of the afternoon, the fastest time had changed hands repeatedly as the race built towards the decisive starters. Alan Hatherly initially set the early reference with a time of 12:38, before Magnus Sheffield became the first rider to beat that mark. Max Walscheid then edged the American to move into the lead with 12:34.50.
Thymen Arensman later raised the standard again with a powerful ride of 12:30, appearing on course for victory as the final favourites began their efforts.
However, Ganna produced a performance on another level. The Italian set the fastest intermediate split before accelerating through the second half of the course to comfortably surpass Arensman’s benchmark and secure the stage victory.

Arensman leads GC contenders as Carapaz loses time

Behind the stage winner, Arensman finished second at 22 seconds, confirming his strong early-season form and placing himself well in the general classification.
Jonathan Milan delivered one of the surprises of the afternoon by finishing fifth with 12:37, an impressive performance from the Italian sprinter on a course that heavily favoured specialist time trialists.
Among the main contenders for the overall classification, Primoz Roglic produced a solid ride to take seventh place, limiting his losses on terrain that suited the most powerful riders.
Antonio Tiberi also delivered a strong effort to finish ninth, while Isaac del Toro completed the top ten. Richard Carapaz endured a much more difficult start to the race, conceding significant time compared to the leading riders and immediately placing himself under pressure in the general classification.
Mathieu van der Poel, meanwhile, took a conservative approach to the stage and finished well down the standings as he focused on the coming road stages.

One of the fastest time trials of the season

Ganna’s performance underlined the extreme pace of the opening stage. His average speed of 56.2 km/h made the Tirreno-Adriatico opener the fastest time trial contested so far during the 2026 season.
With the Italian claiming the first leader’s jersey of the race, the early shape of the general classification has already begun to emerge ahead of the first road stage of the week.
