Remco Evenepoel is seemingly getting close to Tour de France shape after seemingly revealing his power numbers. The Red Bull - BORA Hansgrohe leader is on training camp in Teide, Spain, but released a Youtube video of the behind-the-scenes of his training and preparation for the grand tour.
In the video, the Belgian takes fans with him on two days during his training camp in Teide, Tenerife, a rest day and a higher intensity day that included intervals riding at threshold. While the rest day offered light-hearted insights into the day in the life of Evenepoel, it was the training ride that peaked interest.
The workout lasted over four hours and was aimed around repeated Functional Threshold Power (FTP) efforts. The FTP of a cyclist is in essence the highest average power that a cyclist can sustain for a one hour effort. The FTP of cycling's top riders is usually a detail only known by riders and their coaches.
Remco did one 15 minute interval, two 12 minute efforts, one 10 minute effort and two final eight minute blocks. In the video, team performance coach Dan Lorang described it as a threshold session, hoping that it could prepare Evenepoel for the sensations of longer climbs and race efforts.
During the video's conversation between Lorang and Evenepoel after the rider took a lactate test, to measure whether the rider was making an effort in the targeted zone, Evenepoel appeared to reveal that his FTP was 425 watts - a striking number that indicates he could be set to be in excellent shape for the Tour de France, particularly on long climbs.
For reference, Tadej Pogacar's rumoured FTP lies somewhere in the range of 450 watts, when the Slovenian seemingly leaked his own power data on Strava earlier this year.
Specific Tour de France preparation
Evenepoel will not race before this year's Tour de France following his Liege-Bastogne-Liege podium, and is targeting a tailored preparation at altitude before the Barcelona Grand Depart in which he and his team can work on preparations "down to the last millimeter".
"In recent months, we've seen that Remco can reach a very high level without necessarily participating in preparatory races ," sports director Patxi Vila said in an interview with La Dernière Heure.
"We preferred to focus directly on the Tour, and we believe in this plan. This should allow him to arrive in Barcelona more relaxed and in better shape."
He added: "You never know how things will go, whether he'll be very fast or more relaxed. We want to maintain control of the workload, the motivation, the progress, and the schedule. We want to prepare him down to the last millimeter for the Tour."
