Before the start of Itzulia Basque Country, the Spanish peloton tackles the prestigious GP Miguel Indurain on the 5th of April. Named after the legendary figure of Spanish cycling, this hilly one-day race attracts climbers and riders with prowess in the classics. We preview the race ahead.
The race is one for the puncheurs and climbers, although none are favoured over the other. The peloton will face climbs of different lengths and gradients throughout the entire day and plenty opportunities for attacks.
The race can see it's decisive attacks earlier, however a final selection regardless of the scenario is likely to happen in the final sequence of climbs. They are 4km at 5.4%, 1.6km at 4.6% and 600 meters at 10%. All of these ascents summit in extremely quick succession within the final 10 kilometers and lead into the downhill finish in Estella.
It will be a race that features climbing from start to finish and so it can get very tactical... There is an important aspect to take into consideration, which is that this race comes two days before the start of Itzulia and so many riders will not want to take many risks or exhaust themselves.
BORA and UAE both have many strong climbers and puncheurs and are likely to try and attack from far to use their numbers. They might very well win, but there are several teams with strong cards to be honest. The winning move may come at any point, as chasing in such terrain is quite hard, and a sprint is unlikely at the end of the day.
