The 2016 Tour de France was one where there wasn't much GC action, however a few moments pop out such as Chris Froome's downhill attack, and his crosswinds raid together with Peter Sagan. The former World Champion looks back at that unique day at the Tour.
“That was a special one. Four of us got away and we raced hard to the finish, holding off the peloton," Sagan told in an interview with Cyclingnews. "I was with my teammate and good friend Maciej Bodnar, while Chris Froome was with Geraint Thomas, with everyone else trying to chase like crazy behind."
Sagan still races together with the Pole to this day, in that year they took full advantage of the weather conditions to thrive. Whilst Sagan took the win to help what was to be his fifth consecutive green jersey, Froome took the opportunity to take time on his rivals in the overall classification - only 6 seconds, but nevertheless a tremendous display of power.
"I wanted Bodnar to win but Froome went early in the sprint and so I had to go after him and beat him," Sagan recalls. That was the second of three wins the at-the-time World Champion net in that edition of the Grand Boucle, which have added to the grand total of 12 he has throughout his career. Many years later he continues to try, and hopes to take his first since 2019 this coming month.
