This went sideways fast @MarkCavendish 😅 @cameronwurf 😎
Mark Cavendish announced his retirement from cycling at the Giro d'Italia. Days after he took an emotional win in Rome, and then rode the Tour de France where he came close to the record breaking 35th win. For this goal, it is still on the table postponing his retirement.
"So far we don’t have any update on this," a spokesperson of Astana Qazaqstan Team told GCN. This comes off the back of multiple public admissions that the team would be happy to make a deal with Cavendish for at least one more year, Alexander Vinokourov has not been shy of stating his wishes. Whether or not Cavendish will be in the peloton one more year is effectively his choice to make.
The veteran sprinter is currently training to race the Tour of Turkey later in the year, where he should end his season. After crashing out of the Tour de France however, it would likely be an anti-climatic way to end a long and illustrious career on the road, one that has marked modern cycling more than virtually any other rider.
