Enric Mas is the new leading figure at
Movistar Team, and with Alejandro Valverde's retirement this season the Spanish team is looking towards it's future and security, and they have found a safe and successful bet in the Mallorca native.
“It’s been a really easy decisition to take, because I had clear in mind for many months that remaining a Movistar Team member was the priority for me," Mas said in a press release. "Undoubtedly, the main reason to stay is the great group we have here, both the staff -of excellent technical and personal standards- and the riders, who leave everything on the road for you."
After a few very promising first years as a pro at Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team, Mas was in 2020 hired by Movistar who looked to get the new Spanish sensation. Sure enough Mas has developed into one of the leading Grand Tour contenders, having finished fifth at the Tour-Vuelta double in 2020, sixth and second in 2021. He was close to his first Grand Tour win last year, only beat by Primoz Roglic in the Vuelta a España - he will be riding the two Grand Tours again this year.
He's suffered from several crashes this year, namely as Tirreno-Adriatico and Critérium du Dauphiné where he was looking for results. His preparation was not ideal for the Tour, however he's heading in with high ambitions: “I’m heading into this year’s Tour with huge excitement and ambitions. My goal for the upcoming three years is fighting for those overall podiums in the Tour / Giro / La Vuelta – and hopefully contesting victory at any of the Grand Tours, too.”
