Movistar Team has over history been a team who has focused on the climbers and hilly classics specialists, but recently they have also had a few quality sprinters on board. One of them is Fernando Gaviria who signed into the 2023 season, and now has agreed to spend another season with the Spanish squad.

Quite late into the transfer window, Gaviria was confirmed by Movistar to have renewed another season with the team. This follows the renewals of leadout men Albert Torres and Davide Cimolai recently. The team is also still in negotiations with compatriot Nairo Quintana who is expected to also renew for another season, but this is not yet assured. Brazilian rider Vinicius Rangel is the only other member from the 2024 lineup that hasn't signed a contract for next year.

Gaviria came in as a very experienced sprinter, to lead the team's ambitions in the flat races. After his time with Quick-Step came a long stint at UAE Team Emirates, but this was a team that simply did not have the same support or infrastructure - remembering the lack of an aero bike until recent years - for the sprinters. He has faded in the top of the sprinter world, and in 2023 took on a new challenge. Last season he won stages at the Vuelta a San Juan and Tour de Romandie, and this year only at the Tour Colombia that had a modest field. He has not won since February, although on several occasions he did show top speed throughout the year.

"It is an honour to be able to renew with Movistar Team. A team that, over the years, continues to improve its structure and wants to become stronger. This motivates all the riders on the team to give their best and have good seasons," Gaviria said in a press release.

"Along with the renewals of Albert Torres and Davide Cimolai, I am very happy because we will be able to continue with our group and continue to improve much more in the sprints and flat races."
