Movistar reach 1000th win milestone

Movistar Team is one of the oldest professional structures in the peloton and yesterday it has reached it's 1000th win as Annemiek van Vleuten and Alejandro Valverde took important wins for the team.

Valverde set out for the queen stage of Gran Camiño yesterday with the ambition of cutting down on the lead of Michael Woods who won on the previous day at Mirador do Ézaro. Sure enough the Spanish veteran has done so, taking his 132nd win as a pro rider.

"[I am] very happy, I was very good, we had the race controlled at all times. In the first day third, yesterday second, today third... Very close to the overall, which we are happy with. I did not know the last climbs and they were tremendously hard, specially at the beginning. The last 50 kilometers were through very complicated roads, hard descents... And we tried to have the best positioning possible," Valverde explained after the stage.

He added: "We had Sosa very strong, who did a great work and a fantastic team during all phases of the stage."

Regarding the final sprit, where he beat Michael Woods, he had this to say: "I knew I was faster than him and Sosa launched me well so that I could win. I believe we have done a great race so far and tomorrow, let it be what God wants. If we win, good, and if we do second, good aswell. It will be a beautiful time-trial, not flat at all. We'll see how I recovered and we'll give our maximum."

Valverde sits only 10 seconds away from Michael Woods into tomorrow's 15.8 kilometer time-trial in Sarria. Despite being quite hilly, the Spaniard is the favourite to take the overall win, which would wrap off a strong return to competition after being isolated due to a Covid outbreak in the team.
