Pello Bilbao surprises with strong podium at UAE Tour

Although coming as an outsider, not many would've predicted Pello Bilbao to finish on the podium of the UAE Tour. However with a string of strong and consistent performances, the Bahrain - Victorious riders emerged with a brilliant result.

"It’s super nice to get on the podium here. I wasn’t expected to come here and not super prepared for this race. But I had good legs and, most importantly, a super team," Bilbao said after the finale of the queen stage at Jebel Hafeet.

Bilbao finished the UAE Tour in third place overall. Yesterday at Jebel Hafeet he was one of the main chasers when Adam Yates launched an attack with Tadej Pogacar in the wheel, eventually briding across to the duo with João Almeida in the wheel. As Yates attacked again in the final kilometer Bilbao was again dropped, but went on to finish the stage in third propelling him into the podium.

”I just tried to go on my rhythm, and those around me were suffering, and so I tried to go and stay on the wheel of Pogacar and Yates," he added.

Coming from a strong 2021 season, Bilbao is eyeing the Giro d'Italia this year which he is set to ride alongside Mikel Landa and Vuelta a Andalucia winner Wout Poels. He will be back in competition next week at Strade Bianche.
