Julian Alaphilippe is back to good form and seems consistent. The Soudal - Quick-Step has not suffered setbacks in the form of injuries or illnesses since the spring and is running on great legs at the Criterium du Dauphiné.
“I did my best today, gave absolutely everything I had on this hard ascent," the Frenchman said in an issued press release. "This is a very important week towards the Tour de France and I’m satisfied with how things went. I found pleasure in racing, I found the legs to battle for victory, so I can be content about all of this."
He rode to 19th on the queen stage of the race up to the Col de la Croix de Fer, the toughest and highest summit finish of the race. He lost just over 1:30 minutes on Adam Yates who finished and climbed to second on the day, and has kept his spot in the Top10 because of it, starting the final day of the race in seventh spot, 3:48 minutes behind Jonas Vingegaard.
He is showing good form ahead of the Tour de France where he will be hunting stage wins, but he will now also very likely be considering a stint in the yellow jersey over the opening week, most crucially the opening day which features very steep ascents around Bilbao.
