After a 13th stage of the Tour de France 2024 where the riders gave it their all, we now head to the Pyrenees. There, Jonas Vingegaard will have to try to cut the lead that Tadej Pogacar has taken from him in the first half of the race. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader spoke after a spectacular day of racing.
"We are going to a terrain that suits be a bit more," he said of the two stages coming up this weekend. He also had a few words about the breakaway where Adam Yates slipped in and his reasons for chasing it hard: "We didn't want to let him back into the overall and that's why I've ordered the chase." Visma at a certain point even attacked the peloton en masse, but Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel were quick to react. Visma still worked a lot at the end of the day to provide Wout van Aert with an opportunity to go for the stage win, but the Belgian was second in the final sprint behind Jasper Philipsen.
On the other hand, Tadej Pogacar also attended to the microphones at the end of stage 13: "I had good legs and I was in a good position, I saw the opportunity to make a Top 10, it's always nice. But we are calm, I did not leave my safety zone, I had a clear head, the team was well positioned and I was able to make that effort without suffering great stress," he said after finishing ninth today.
However as we enter the Pyrenees, it could be terrain that is more favourable to the defending champion, featuring longer and steep climbs and less explosive terrain. Thus far, Visma have been conservative in the key stages of the race, but a new race starts tomorrow and although a lot has happened already in this race, the most important stages are only now beginning.
