As the season winds down this week with the last major races to be concluded,
Jonas Vingegaard is seemingly ramping things up as he has been spotted training in Mallorca. The Visma | Lease a Bike leader has been out of action since breaking his collarbone in a nasty Tour de France crash.
The Danish rider is a two-time winner of the Tour, and second in the last two editions before his race
was cut short at the end of week two. Both rider and team announced that his season would end in the aftermath as he underwent surgery for his broken collarbone.
However, with a lengthy gap between his Tour crash and the beginning of next season, the 29-year-old has seemingly recovered well and is already out training. But with all the major races wrapped up with this week's Tour of Guangxi, it will be at least three months until he is likely to pin a number.
A picture has
emerged showing him out training in Mallorca. Posted to both Instagram and X, the Dane appears in good shape as he was snapped on the Spanish island - a hotspot for cyclists and amateur riders looking to capitalise on favourable weather over the colder months.
Vingegaard ended season in August
With a timeline for recovery that meant the Dane could feature in some latter season races, it was speculated initially after his Tour abandon that he could aim to bounce back. However, any comeback speculation was quickly silenced by his team in mid-August.
At the time, Vingegaard said: “After a long and intense racing period, a recovery period was planned after the Tour de France anyway.
"Due to the collarbone injury, the start of my training has been delayed and it is not possible for me to get back to top level in the coming period. The focus is on preparing optimally for the goals of the 2027 season. I will discuss these specific goals with the team in the coming period.”
Vingegaard's 2026 change of pace
Vingegaard's crash and subsequent confirmation that his season has ended came just after he revealed that he considered retirement at the end of the 2025 season before coming to an agreement with the Dutch team over improved autonomy over his schedule and training.
Citing an improved balance between life and professional cycling, Vingegaard admitted that he had enjoyed the change and that he would have further talks with the team over this winter.
The emergence of Vingegaard also comes after Paul Seixas's win at Il Lombardia. The 20-year-old Frenchman followed up his Tour de France fourth place to take the biggest win of his career and topping off a year that has seen him become one of the top general classification riders in the world.
As the Decathlon rider's rise continues, he's been compared to both Vingegaard and Tadej Pogacar as a potential rival for the pair in the coming years.
