"I have to decide whether to sign or call it a day" - Primoz Roglic close to deciding his future in pro cycling

Primoz Roglic is potentially on the verge of retiring, or signing a new deal to prolong his stay within professional cycling. The decision is not made yet, and the Slovenian is close to announcing what will be of his future after he raced for the final time in Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe colours this Saturday at Il Lombardia.
Roglic, a former Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España winner, Olympic Champion and winner of many of cycling's top races, has spent his last three years with Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe. His contract ends this year, with renewal not being an option.
After many years spent at the Visma structure, his stint with Red Bull saw him regain sole leadership at first, which has since faded with the rise of Florian Lipowitz and Giulio Pellizzari; and the signing of Remco Evenepoel.
Roglic no longer fits the team's plans and, after struggling to achieve the same results as in the past, it was possible that the veteran was heading towards retirement - now at age 36.

Late 2026 run might change Roglic's plans
Yet his season finale has been extraordinary. Despite the lack of collective support and a crash that took weeks of training out of him ahead of La Vuelta, he managed to ride to a second place only behind Enric Mas - giving signs of his best self.
But Roglic's form wasn't limited to the Spanish Grand Tour, where he has famously reached his top level many times before. At the World Championships he finished 21st but was notably part of the key attack that included Mathieu van der Poel and Quinn Simmons.
Whilst the European Championships saw him struggle in the road race and only finish 10th in a modest field at home, the time trial turned his race, season and potentially career around. An European title achieved at home was the best possible result his career needed at this point in time, giving him a brand new jersey which he might go on to show off in 2027 and motivate him to stay in the peloton.
Contract on the table for Roglic
“There are no major updates compared to a few days ago, I haven’t decided yet," Roglic said in words to Siol.
Talks about Roglic's future have been constant. A potential deal with Tudor Pro Cycling Team (or, to a minor degree, Lotto - Intermarché) are in the cards, both providing the Slovenian with full leadership and the space to decide on his own future.
"Very significant things happened at the end of the season. I need to reflect on how to fit all of this into the bigger picture. I have a lot on my mind, and the issue is me. I have to decide whether to sign or call it a day. Sometimes I lean one way, sometimes the other.”
Roglic's words hint at a contract being on the table, and Roglic himself wanting the time and space to decide on what he wants from his future. Retirement is possible, but it is also clear that he has the option to stay in the peloton for another year if he chooses to do so.

- Hmm it's an interesting take with certain disclaimers e.g. comparing them at the same age (Pogi wasn't given chances so early in his career so we will never know), the level of the competitors in the race or tour (really hard to compare, as you would be looking at multiple competitors, let alone comparing just Seixas vs Pogi). In any case, Seixas' future certainly looks very bright, especially as he has the advantage of youth, access to new scientific knowledge/methods that weren't around when Pogi started, and most importantly has Pogi as an extremely good example to aspire to (e.g. copying training methods, nutrition, tactics, race craft, etc., to list just a few...).Pogboom12-10-2026

Most of the best riders are (really) good for 4-5 years (Alaphilippe, Sagan), of course outside this window you can win stages etc. but forget about GC winner in main tours. Talents like Pogacar (in case of GC) or MvdP (monuments or CX - 15 years being on top!!!) are rarity. - Winning Il Lombardia would surely mean much more to Remco than to Seixas, after his crash there and then second places where he was far ahead of the rest but still far behind Pog, and had to blink away tears at the finish. Wonder if he will ever have such a good chance again.Hills3312-10-2026
- Yeah him, Del Toro for sure - not that they all pan out, but then how can you tell what someone was going to be capable of if they never got to be an out-and-out leader? - And let's not forget, Tadej Pogačar won his first Tour de France eating pizza, drinking beer and playing Playstation. This kept goinig on for another two years and when he lost the Tour 2X to Jonas, things dramaticaly changed. Today Pogi is a "killing machine." In 2024, in the Tours rest day, Pogi said: "If I compare the year 2019 to what we're doing today, we were real amatuers." ... That is the difference between Pogi and Seixas. Seixas immediately got professional help and advice, he knows exactly what he wants and is already at a very high level. So, the paths of Pogi and Seixas weren't the same.PogiSloFans12-10-2026

- Why on EARTH would a rider capable of leading races, leading an entire squad in any race he wishes to go and be (yet another) second fiddle rider to his main competition? Especially when his career is in the ascendant, holding the hope of a nation. You want to be the best - then you want to race against the best. I wish UAE as a team all the best for the most part, but I really dislike their approach of removing any barriers to their golden goose by warehousing them on their squad until they get sufficiently bored and/or pissed off and leave.wrsty12-10-2026
