Jonas Vingegaard has bounced back after a bad day at the
Tour de France. In the time-trial he lost considerable time to Tadej Pogacar and today
Team Visma | Lease a Bike resumed charge against the World Champion in a hilly day where a lot could've happened.
"The time trial was a tough day, and I was definitely disappointed, as I should have been. Now I feel much better again, and I'm happy about that. Now we're focusing on the next stage," Vingegaard said after concluding stage 6.
Visma were aware to the fact that there was serious interest in the peloton to make it into the day's breakaway this Thursday morning and tried taking advantage of it. UAE Team Emirates - XRG kept a close eye on all of the riders from the Dutch team, who attacked with Victor Campenaerts, Wout van Aert, Tiesj Benoot and even Matteo Jorgenson - whilst none made it into the day's breakaway, Simon Yates did, even if the Briton didn't play a role later in the stage.
Visma were very active and trying to create problematic situations for the Slovenian ahead of the mountain stages where it'll be harder to surprise. Towards the end of the stage the team returned to the front of the peloton, pushing perhaps to try and keep Tadej Pogacar in the yellow jersey and having to spend time in the podium ceremonies for a few extra days.
In the final sprint to the line, Vingegaard was a close match to Pogacar in the double-digit gradients, another indicator of good form, which did not match with the previous days' disappointment. "It wasn't due to the explosive stages we've already had, because if I had, I would have had a harder time now. We need to analyze what went wrong".
"It's been a long week. When I saw the course, I thought it would be a quiet week. But that's clearly not the case, so we can expect another tough Tour," he assures. "I've improved after the Dauphiné, I'm sure of that. Whether it's enough, we'll see."
