Team Visma | Lease a Bike have had a tough day at Paris-Nice. It had everything to be a positive day as Matteo Jorgenson rode a brilliant final climb, but Jonas Vingegaard definitely struggled as he crashed early in the day suffering injuries in the face and hand - and it's effects may be bigger than what it seemed like on TV.
"I came back from a toilet stop and I saw that Jonas had fallen," Matteo Jorgenson said to Sporza. "He told me that he thinks his hand is broken. It looked really painful. Jonas had difficulty holding his handlebars and could hardly brake. He was afraid that he would have to pass and I had to take my own chance."
It was a stressful day for the Dutch team that tried to manage the situation as best as possible. Vingegaard's positioning into the final climb made it very obvious that there was a major problem at hands, as he failed to stay together with Jorgenson and Axel Zingle. In the final climb he did not have the power and lost a significant amount of time plus the yellow jersey back to his teammate.
Victor Campenaerts shared the incident from his point of view: "I don't really know what happened. Halfway through the stage, they got caught in the peloton and Jonas fell on his face. He had hurt his hand a lot and could no longer use his left brake". The Belgian reports that Vingegaard had been in a lot of pain, and he stayed with the Dane all the way into the final steep ascent where the gradients reached 18%.
"We then chose to stay out of the stress and to move up on the climbs. That is of course not ideal, because you waste a lot of strength. The damage in time is limited, but hopefully there is not too much damage from the fall," Campenaerts adds, before sharing a worrying sign. "Jonas spoke about dizziness. He must have suffered incredibly. Now he has to visit the doctor and hopefully the verdict will be not so bad."
Vingegaard will go to the hospital most likely to check on his injuries and understand if there is a fracture involved, but for the former Tour de France winner it was a day to manage the losses. "Given the circumstances, it is very impressive that he finished this stage. I did not have the impression that he was very lucid. He got through it a bit, but he could no longer hold his brake."
