GC Update Paris-Nice 2025 stage 5 - Matteo Jorgenson back in the yellow jersey after Jonas Vingegaard crashes; Almeida and Skjelmose lose valuable time
Cycling
Stage 5 of Paris-Nice wasn't expected to be the queen stage of the race, but the damage it has done was greater than most would've predicted. Jonas Vingegaard crashed, and alongside him a few other riders struggled on the brutally steep final climb to lose a lot of time in the fight for the yellow jersey.
Vingegaard was disappointed to not have won at Le Lage des Gardes, however he had taken the yellow jersey on his shoulders. This afternoon he suffered a small crash and it led to bad feelings on a day that was important. The Dane did not have the legs on the final climb and lost 23 seconds to his teammate (plus 2 bonus seconds).
Mattias Skjelmose, João Almeida and Brandon McNulty also lost key time to their direct rivals in the fight for the podium. Vingegaard is now 22 seconds away from Jorgenson who is back in the race lead; with Florian Lipowitz climbing to third after a strong climb and also 2 bonus seconds he had grabbed earlier.

Almeida now sits fourth 40 seconds away from Jorgenson, whilst Lenny Martínez took full advantage of the final climb to claw back time and is now 5th at 55 seconds. Mattias Skjelmose and Brandon McNulty follow shortly after, with the gaps between many of these riders closing as Champoussin and Tejada close the Top10 for an Astana that did an amazing work today.

- his Roubaix win was amazing. not to take anything away from him - arguably one of MVDP's wins was at the expense of a WVA flat - but so many things need to line up to get one of these. He had a perfect race with fewer bike issues on an attritional course. And crazy strong as usual. Glad he got this done.mij04-11-2026

- A mindset that reminds me of Tim Declerq. I loved watching that guy just pound away the kilometers, hours at the front, holding an entire breakaway in check on his own. Bjerg seems like a similar guy. Curling, the team sport.RidesHills04-11-2026
