Jakob Fuglsang has had a brilliant career in cycling. The Dane has won two Monuments, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and Il Lombardia, 2 times the Critérium du Dauphiné and a silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games. But 2025 will be his last season. He will race it with the team that has been a part of since 2022; Israel - Premier Tech.
"I have a program until the Tour de Suisse, and then time will tell what happens after the race. We'll see if I stop after the Tour de Suisse or if I continue. But it looks like it's my last season. Something strange would happen if I continued," the 39-year-old begins at Feltet.dk.
Why the Tour de Suisse? Because Fuglsang has a great relationship with this race. The year he came closest to winning it was in 2018, when he finished second behind Richie Porte. But it goes beyond results, because the Danish cyclist was born in Geneva.
"It would be a great way to finish. I hope to come out of the Giro in good shape and have good form in the other part. So it would be great to finish strong, but the level is very high among the young riders, so it could be difficult. It would be a dream to finish with a win, but let's see how the season goes," he says.
Although he doesn't rule out continuing beyond the Tour de Suisse: "It would have to be if the team thinks the team needs me and wants me to continue, and of course the level is right. That's probably it. In the end, it's the team that decides," he explains.
But not only does he not rule out staying in cycling after the 2025 Tour de Suisse, he's not saying 'a definite no' to 2026: "If things go really, really well, I might consider it. I still think it's fun, that's why I'm still here. But, of course, I'm getting older," the climber reflects.
"What pulls the other way the most is that I also have to be away from the family. We have two kids who are growing so much that we have to take care of them. And for my wife, Loulou, it's a lot of work to take care of the children alone for so long, but we'll see. Right now the plan is 2025, but it's six months at a time, let me put it that way," he adds.
