Soren Waerenskjold is the reigning under-23 World time-trial champion however he had yet to taken a win at Elite level. His talent was written all over, and the Norwegian took the first triumph of his career today at the Saudi Tour.
“I did not expect this in advance. I knew the last climb was a bit steep, but there was a really steep part," Waerenskjold said in the post-race interview. "I let myself sink there a bit to save myself for the sprint. I knew I could continue following the group after that. That went perfectly.”
The hilly finish was a match for the puncheurs, however the lack of distance in the final ascent meant that it was a very open finale. The attacks of Zdenek Stybar and Santiago Buitrago weren't successful, and it was Uno-X themselves who brought the reduced group to the line to prepare Waerenskjold.
“We now chose the right side and as a result we caught less wind from the side. That was much better compared to yesterday when we did poorly. We learned from that," he explains. Despite Jonathan Milan launching his sprint, the Norwegian showed tremendous form by matching yesterday's stage winner and topping in towards the line.
"It's fantastic. I've waited a long time for this. I had already won in the reserves (under-23, ed.), but I was not yet able to win in the pros," the 22-year old added.
Tomorrow will be the queen stage of the race where he's unlikely to play a role, but despite his success he remains humble and focused on the team's goals: "It is also very good for team morale. We hope to continue to do well. Tomorrow It's up to Jakub Hindsgaul. He was very strong today and one of my leadouts.”
