Taking to the start line at La Fleche Wallone as the overwhelming favourite to take the win, Tadej Pogacar will be out to rewrite history after three self-admitted disappointments in his previous visits to the race.
"I have no idea what will happen," Pogacar admits to L'Equipe. "I've done this race three times now and always something went wrong. In addition, it is two hundred kilometres, so that everyone has a little more freshness at the end," the 24-year-old explains.
Prior to his Amstel Gold Race victory, Pogacar's inclusion at La Fleche Wallone was seemingly up in the air. For him however, racing was always the most obvious choice. "There was no point in going home for two days after the Amstel Gold Race and then coming back here," he says. "In addition, the Fleche Wallone is a very nice race, which I would not have wanted to miss."
Referring to his tactics, Pogacar eludes to the fact that he may not wait for the Mur de Huy to make his attack. “You have sixty guys at the bottom of that climb, but they're all fighting for their first corner spot. And then it's only one kilometre," the UAE Team Emirates leader explains. "Whether attacking before the Mur de Huy is an option? I think that would be a bit risky. It's possible."
