Jonas Vingegaard finished second in the
Criterium du Dauphiné behind an unstoppable
Tadej Pogacar. There was little to add from the
Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider after three days of the same performances in the mountains against his rivals, but he is now fully focused on the Tour de France.
"We have the focus on just us, on our process, on being the best we can be at the Tour, and we continue that way beyond what happened here," Vingegaard said in a flash interview this Sunday after riding to second place on the Dauphiné - both for the stage and overall classifications.
On what he could improve in particular before facing the Grande Boucle starting next July 5, he answered the following: "A little bit of everything, in acceleration on the longer climbs, I hope to be able to step up in the next 3 weeks until the start of the Tour."
"Tadej seems to be very very strong, it's hard to see anything, we have the focus more on us, to be honest, and if I saw something I wouldn't say it here," the Dane continues. Although he has attacked today instead of having to respond to the Slovenian, he couldn't drop his rival and the two rolled through the finish together.
"Being the current winner has more pressure than being second, it also depends on your preparation, of course there's more pressure on him, but I think he's in a situation where he can handle it, so I don't think that changes anything. I think we've both been able to handle the pressure over the last few years."
But Vingegaard does launch the pressure card to Pogacar's side into the Tour de France, with obvious reasons why: "Of course Tadej is the clear favorite, but I don't think they underestimate anyone."
The Dane was asked what he had talked to Pogacar about on the last stage of Dauphiné and this is what he said: "I have talked to him, I don't remember very well what we said to each other, once it was at the back of the peloton, which was breaking and we talked whether we had to go forward or not and we decided not to go. It's nice to talk to him from time to time in the race."
