Nathan Van Hooydonck has been a loyal servant to
Jumbo-Visma ever since his signing in 2021, helping to team to multiple successes. most recently aiding
Tiesj Benoot's win at
Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne. In 2023 he is keen to continue the pattern.
“We are a close-knit team and really want to win races as a team. We have made clear agreements about this. It is hard for some of your colleagues to believe that such a thing is possible, but it really is," the 27-year-old Belgian tells WielerFlits. "Wout wants to win major classics, Dylan wants that, Christophe Laporte and Tiesj Benoot can do it both. And myself? I really play a serving role in the greatest classics. That has to be. The team's interest is still above my own interest. I do not mind."
Being in a team as star-studded as Jumbo Visma's, it could seem difficult to find your own place to shine but Van Hooydonck believes he has found his niche. “I know how to approach my role. That has become my specialty. I also know that I am among the best in the world at this type of work," he says. "We may be the best team, but of course we have a lot of respect for our competitors. We certainly don't underestimate them. That's the biggest mistake you can make. But we do want to win back all the great classics, with a clear plan.”
Placing second behind teammate Benoot as part of a Jumbo-Visma one-two at Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne, Van Hooydonck had arguably his best career performance. He is still waiting for that elusive first professional win however, something he dreams of changing in 2023. "Of course, I would like to win one myself," he admits. "But I know that's a trade-off between my two ambitions, you know? I want to ride all the big races. I like that and I think I belong there. Only then do I also know that it is very difficult to win myself.”
