With five, maybe six sprint stages available to the fast men at the
Vuelta a San Juan and a strong leadout,
Fabio Jakobsen travelled to Argentina with high ambitions. However, he's won only one stage, and sprinted only to fourth place on stage 6 leaving him disappointed in a sprinted that suited him well.
“It was a very fast sprint. Maybe we were there a little too early, but timing is tricky on such a wide road," Jakobsen said in a post-race interview. "I was first for a moment, but the guys who came out of the slipstream with the wind had just a little more speed.”
'The guys' where Sam Welsford who stormed to a surprising win in impressive fashion, but also Sam Bennett and Fernando Gaviria. With the presence of Michael Morkov, Yves Lampaert and even Remco Evenepoel who's been helping in leadout duty, it was not enough for the European champion to turn it into a win - as he has on the second stage of the race.
“That's sprinting. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. I have one more chance tomorrow and we will try again," Jakobsen concluded. As the race heads back into the city of San Juan today, Jakobsen will have another opportunity to succeed in what should be yet another bunch sprint.
