The 27 years old sprinter of Team DSM got a surprising win in Vuelta a San Juan. He has been under the radar the last sprints but today the team strategy was fully in him, and it brought them a win on probably the best sprint finish so far.
“The team was great, I couldn't have done it without the guys. They looked after me all day, like they have been doing all week. They believed in me, they helped me, and today they said this sprint would suit me. So we went full steam ahead. The last five kilometers they were fully committed. I think we really deserve this win. This win is really for the boys”, stated Welsford in the post-race conference.
The flat stage wasn't much eventful besides the early breakaway and Egan Bernal drop out. But after the break was caught things got much faster according to Welsford.
“After that, it was a really fast run-up towards the real sprint. I think we reached speeds of 75 kilometers per hour in the sprint, so it was very fast. The last five kilometers were really tough”, said the Australian sprinter.
Sam Welsford never raced in Argentina and now on his first ever presence in the country the 27 years old fast man got his best victory against very strong competition. He has beaten cleanly names that included Fabio Jakobsen, Sam Bennett and Fernando Gaviria all very credit top sprinters.
“ I think it's fantastic. The crowd really supported us, throughout the whole stage. Look at the finish here, just before the velodrome. The crowd was also lined up the last few kilometers. I think it's very nice to win here.”, concluded Welsford
