Puck Pieterse may have been beaten to the finish line by
Mischa Bredewold at Sunday’s
Amstel Gold Race, but she did manage to win one
race, the race to down her drink.
Bredewold produced a tactically brilliant ride to take
victory. When Ellen van Dijk launched an attack, Bredewold followed her fellow
Dutchwoman, while the stronger climbers, Juliette Labous, Pieterse, and Silvia
Persico, were left behind. On the final ascent of the Cauberg, Bredewold
dropped Van Dijk and powered solo to the line.
"I think it was 0.0 beer," Bredewold said during
an appearance on In de Waaier. "I didn't know that."
"That's a funny story: I had a doping test and forgot
to fill in that I had had a glass of alcohol. That really stressed me out. I
ran back to our doctor to say that we had to go back and fill it in. Two hours
later I thought: I think it was 0.0, so it wasn't necessary at all, haha."
She also revealed her frustration at losing the post-race
drinking contest to Pieterse. "I really wanted to beat Puck, but I didn't
succeed. I'm still pissed about that, haha. I thought: shit. That's actually
the biggest victory of the day, haha."
Bredewold had no complaints about Pieterse giving it
everything in the final kilometre. "Of course we didn't talk about letting
each other win. I would have hit her on the head if she had given me the gift.
That doesn't make sense, because I would have done exactly the same thing the
other way around."
"Puck and I are good friends and we really want each
other to have it, but in racing we are each other's competitors. First it is to
win yourself or one of your teammates, and if that does not work I prefer Puck.
But in the end you are mainly concerned with yourself."
