On Monday, April 21, Colombian cycling legend Lucho Herrera was accused by a protected witness as a participant in a disappearance and murders that occurred in 2002. The former winner of the Vuelta a España has spoken out on the matter, with the publication of an official statement in which he denies these accusations.

Lucho Herrera's statement

"On Sunday, April 20, through the Noticias Uno newscast, I was informed of a decision adopted by a criminal judge of the Fusagasugá circuit, in which copies were ordered to the Attorney General's Office to investigate my alleged participation in criminal acts related to the forced disappearance and murder of several peasants in that region, more than twenty years ago (...).".
In view of these facts, I would like to state:
  1. I have never belonged to criminal organizations nor have I ever intended to cause harm to anyone. My life has been dedicated to the sport, and after my retirement from professional cycling, to work honestly. I emphatically reject the accusations that seek to muddy my name and my trajectory as a citizen, worker and family man.
  2. In my career as a businessman and trader I have been a victim of extortion, threats and kidnappings, situations that have been brought to the attention of the authorities. In 2016 I empowered my lawyers to request information before the Attorney General's Office and promote the corresponding complaints in the face of false versions and undue pressure.
  3. As soon as I found out about the copy certification, I sought the necessary legal advice and I have made myself available to the Attorney General's Office to provide all the explanations that correspond according to the law.
  4. I deeply respect the role of the media and the citizen's right to be informed. Therefore, I will be willing to offer public statements once I know concretely the facts and the charges attributed to me by people I do not know, and I can prove my total innocence.
  5. From today, through my attorneys-in-fact, I have expressed before the Attorney General's Office my unwavering willingness to cooperate with justice and to comply with any judicial requirement.
I thank those who have expressed their support, the media for their informative work and, once the corresponding legal procedures have been completed, I will be ready to offer the necessary statements," he concluded.
